Understanding Independence Day

Year after year on June 12, we Filipinos go out and celebrate Independence Day. Of course, it's true that not all of us go out and celebrate. Some of us stay home and watch TV instead. But the point here - the premise which allows us to pad this article to the correct word length - is, have we ever bothered to ask ourselves what it is exactly we're celebrating?

I was with some friends last night, one of whom is a staunch supporter of Roman Romulo, Congressional candidate in Pasig City and son of Executive Secretary Alberto Romulo. Asked why her entire family was supporting Romulo, she answered unabashedly, "Because he can help my family." I did not find it necessary to pursue the point but my husband was persistent.

"Will it make a difference to the residents of Pasig City who wins?", he asked her.

Why I don't vote

I don't vote anymore. Not since the 1987 Constitution was ratified. It's disenchantment with the law and politics. I've decided that true democracy is an ideal and is unrelated to the form of government we have today. A government of the people, by the people, for the the people. But who are the people? The teeming masses who voted for Joseph Estrada?

Monuments to greed

Pyramids are usually associated with Egypt, but the Philippines has discovered it has them too. The most recently unearthed one cost P25 billion and was built by ten thousand dupes.

They built the monument to greed, egged on by arch priestess Rosario Baladjay, who promised fantastic returns on investments in her company, Multinational Telcom Investors (Multitel).
